Picture postcard of Hongochi Reservoir at the end of the Meiji Period. Nagasaki had suffered from cholera since 1858. Although the Kurata viaduct had provided good quality water, the structure of the wooden container was not perfect and it could not prevent sewage from seeping in. Moreover, the water was not potable and could not be used to extinguish fires. Consequently the Hongochi Reservoir was constructed in June 1891.
