| The population of Nagasaki City increased in 1898 when parts of Nagasaki Village, Tomachi Village, Yamazato Village, Fuchi Village, and Kosakaki Village were amalgamated. Nishiyama Reservoir, seen here, was built because the water supply from Hongochi Reservoir was insufficient for the larger community. Nishiyama Reservoir, which had a capacity of 8,000,000 koku (14.4 million liters), supplied water to all households, helped in the eradication of cholera, and was effective in extinguishing fires. Consequently, people appreciated the reservoir greatly. |
